I was asked to design the lighting for a film noir themed gala event in a large open space. The space was to be broken up into several different areas: a silent auction, casino, dance floor, entrance and a lounge downstairs. The photos enclosed show the area before our work, a rendering and then the final result. My original concept used much more color than the final result, due to financial and time restraints.
The first series is the silent auction area: large tables were to be set up containing the items with movies projected on the wall in the corner. I wanted to cool this area down with blue light along the ceiling. Spotlights, like the 20th Century Fox logo, uplit the area near where the movies were playing and templates gave texture to the brick walls. In the end, the walls themselves provided more than enough texture.
The second series is the dance floor: giant red lips templates across the entire floor to add color and whimsy. This came off exactly as we had discussed.
The third series if the casino: gaming tables scattered through the space, with green accents around the space and each table having downlights to enable enough light to see properly, as well as add a hint of the dramatic. Catering ended up taking more space than originally planned and some elements were cut at the last moment making it a simpler idea.
A shot of the entrance and one of the bar near the dance floor before the series of the lounge downstairs. The theme was "femme fatale" and red boas were hung from the ceiling while red uplights played along the walls, giving a colorful and edgy look to the space.
