What is design?

Forethought. Strategy. Planning. For me, it involves having a clear set of ideas of what I want to do with the piece. The ideas may change when we get to the space, but to have a plan to be adapted is the main element.

One of the main problems of an idea is how to communicate it with others. Talking is invaluable, and one of the main tools. I have discovered that there are a number of visual aids that I try and empoy, sketches, photographs and computer-aided rendering among them. But no matter what, the key is to get the point across to my audience, whether it is a director, producer, or another designer. I believe in using the tool that will help in the process in an efficient manner. Much time can be spent on a CAD rendering when a simple sketch would have sufficed. The key is explaining the concept. In the pages that follow, I have shown some visual elements and described my thoughts during the process to help show what I was trying to accomplish. Photos from the pieces, located in the Portfolio section, can help show how well the initial idea was followed.

Keep in mind that all of the visual tools can show elements and portions of an idea, but the most important thing is to have that initial concept. Without that, any visual elements are lacking the necessary foundation to build the design on.
